Director Garth Davis - Mary Magdalene Exclusive Interview
Zehra Phelan interviews director Garth Davis for his latest film Mary Magdalene.
He talks about the difference between religious and spiritual aspects of the script, and about the research beyond the Gospel of Mark and Gospel of Mary. He talks about how now is the first time the story has been told from a female point of view. He also talks about casting Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus.
Davis has directed Top of the Lake and Love My Way and his debut feature Lion garnered Oscar nominations. He will reunite with Rooney Mara next on A House in the Sky telling the story of Amanda Lindhout, A young journalist is captured in Somalia and held in captivity for more than a year.
The film stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim. Written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, The film is directed by Garth Davis.
An authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary (Rooney Mara), a young woman in search of a new way of living. Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth (Joaquin Phoenix). She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
Mary Magdalene is released in UK cinemas 1 March 2018.
