At the end of the 19th century, scientists assumed that there was a developed civilization on Mars, similar to ours. Giovanni Schiaparelli from Italy noticed straight, long lines on the surface of the Red Planet through a telescope and thought they were man-made channels. Later, the astronomer Percival Lowell suggested that a Martian civilization had built an extensive network of aqueducts to deliver water to its settlements from the polar caps of the planet. It is no wonder that, given such a point of view by science, the radio adaptation of H.G.Wells' "War of the Worlds", in which the author describes how Martians conquer Earth, caused a real panic among many listeners in the US. They seriously thought that Mars was attacking!

Presenter is Vladimir Surdin, astronomer, senior researcher at the Sternberg Astronomical Institute.
