No stress ear tagging of new Dexter calves. Plus tools and tags.
I know I have already done one film on ear tagging, but this short film goes into a little more detail.
All cattle in the UK have to be identifiable, We do this by applying ear tags that correspond with a government issued Cattle passport. We tag our calves as soon as possible, sometimes within just a few hours of birth as long as the calf is up and sucking. If possible we wait until the calf settles down to sleep and then tag him or her as quickly as possible while taking care not to damage veins etc. and leaving enough room for the ear to grow into the tag as the animal matures.
Tagging older calves can be hard work as they grow in size and brute strength very quickly making more invasive restraint like a crush or halter necessary.
